A promising Canadian cultivar bred at the University of Saskatchewan; fruits late (even one month later(!) than other Haskaps), thus extending its harvest season.
A vigorous grower, develops an elevated and compact habit with strong and stiff sprouts which do not sag under the weight of fruits as in other varieties; good for mechanical harvesting.
Yields oval and heart-shaped berries which weigh 2.6 g (max. 3.7 g) on average and are firm, fleshy and extremely tasty; they do not drop off and their pedicels are fi xed at the point of attachment hard enough for mechanical harvesting.
Fruits at the end of July and at the beginning of August, its harvest season typically falls in the third week of August (according to the climate and weather observations for Saskatoon, Canada); yields regular and abundant crops.
Boasts all the characteristics ideal for machine harvesting; its fruits are usually one-dimensional and oval in shape with heavy and thick skin; its bushes become compact and stiff, they are resistant to diseases (mildew) and yield extremely delicious berries.
To obtain its good crop, it is recommended to plant several diff erent Haskap varieties together (to enable crosspollination) and it is good to grow such plants which bloom at the same time, especially ‘Boreal Beast’ – those two cultivars were called ‘Boreal Beauty’ and ‘Boreal Beast’ (the “Beauty and the Beast”) to be easily associated and matched; ‘Boreal Blizzard’ also blooms at a similar time.
